Dr Richard Swainson gained the first doctorate in Film Studies awarded at the University of Waikato, New Zealand.   He was the film critic for “Nexus”, the Waikato University student magazine, from 1992 through 1994,  and resumed writing for the same publication in 2007 with weekly, cinema related articles.   Between 2003 and early 2010 Dr Swainson delivered regular film reviews on Contact 88.1 FM, the University of Waikato’s student station.  He contributes DVD reviews to both “Uno” magazine and “The Waikato Times” and co-hosts The Film Show every Sunday night at 10pm on Community Radio Hamilton 106.7 FM.   In the late 1990s he was the regional film reviewer for Prime television and also produced original material for Big TV, an independent station broadcast out of the University of Waikato.

Dr Swainson’s opinion column, an idiosyncratic commentary on sport, religion, politics and/or whatever might be on its author’s mind at the time, is published every Tuesday in “The Waikato Times”.

The film reviews and critical essays on this site are drawn from material either previously published or broadcast on radio.   Most, but not all, of the titles discussed are available for rental from Auteur House.
