“RocknRolla” (2008)

There’s a slightly warmed over feeling about this latest gangster effort from Guy Ritchie, a bit like yesterday’s fish ‘n chips when they come out of the microwave.  There’s no shortage of characters or convoluted incident, the geezer talk gets a fair old work out by actors well schooled in rhyming slang, and everything is slickly produced and snappily paced.  What’s missing is any kind of freshness or the edge that Ritchie brought to the likes of “Snatch”.  Tom Wilkinson evidently has fun as the villain of the piece but he seems to be channelling Michael Caine circa 1986, and while I could look at Thandie Newton all day she’s again used for little more than window dressing, getting lost in all the homoeroticism.
